15 Places to Visit in Ouro Preto and Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil

From December, 28, 2017 to January, 02, 2018, I visited Ouro Preto and Mariana, historical cities in Minas Gerais, and now I list some nice things I have done there 😉

1- Villa Koa Café.

This is a cosy coffee house and it was my favorite in Ouro Preto. The prices are fair  and the coffee and food are good.

2- Mina du Veloso.

This is an interesting mine to visit in Ouro Preto. It was digged by slaves and not by using dynamites, so it is very narrow and you have to lean over to pass in some spots. The day I went there, the guide was really good and told many stories, which made this tour being one of my favorites.

3- Casa Glaura restaurant.

I wrote about it here (in Portuguese). It was my favorite restaurant in Brazil, but it closed. I saw it is opened again, but with a different chef, so I don’t know if the food is as good as it was when I ate there.

4- Churches in Ouro Preto.

You can’t go to Ouro Preto and not visiting the churches. They are beautiful and adorned with gold. You have to pay to visit them (between R$3,00 and R$10,00) and in most of them there isn’t a person telling the story of the church, so you have to google it if you want to know the history.

5- Conto de Réis.

One of the most famous restaurant in the city. You pay R$ 50,00 and can eat as much as you want. Food is good. Try the pastel de angu and the jaboticaba jam. You can also try the cachaça.

6- Cachoeira das Andorinhas.

It is a little far from the downtown but it is nice to visit it. There are some waterfalls and the most famous is the one that falls inside a grotto. It is gorgeous and the water is freezing.

7- Tiradentes restaurant.

It is cheap (R$ 15,00) and the food is delicious. Try the chicken with ora pro nobis.

8- Ouro Preto fair.

It is at Largo de Coimbra and there are lots of products made using pedra sabão.

9- Ouvidor.

One more restaurant. The food is good, but it was not one of my favorites. The portions are big, we ordered two dishes and shared by five people.

10- Museu da Inconfidência.

This is a nice museum with interesting information about inconfidência mineira, society at colonial years and Aleijadinho.

11- Train Ouro Preto – Mariana.

This is a nice one hour ride with beautiful landscapes.

12- Sinhá Olímpia.

A restaurant in Mariana. We ordered one tutu de feijão and all 5 ate it.

13- Mina da Passagem.

This mine is in Mariana and it is very different from Mina du Veloso. You enter it by trolley and it is very big. There is a part with king of a small lake and it is very beautiful.

14- Downtown and churches in Mariana.

I went to Mariana with a touristic agency. We walked in the historical center and churches, I liked São Pedro. As it wasn’t finished, it seem more minimalist without the gold.

These were my indications. For sure, I did not mention lots of places, but maybe I can come back one day and update this post. To finish this text, I want to say that I loved these days in Ouro Preto and Mariana: the places, history, food and, of course, to spend time with my friends.
