From September, 30 to October, 15, 2017, I visited Maceió, the capital of Alagoas, and now I list some nice things I have done there 😉
1- Visiting the beaches of Alagoas south litoral.
On a sunny Sunday, I went to Praia do Gunga, Barra de São Miguel and the famous Praia do Francês. These are really beautiful beaches and at Gunga, there is an overlook where you can enjoy the wonderful view.
2- Taking a beer at Empório Bierwelt.
This is the main brewpub with different beer styles. If you enjoy the beer world, it is worth to pass by there.
3- Visiting the downtown and taste a passaporte at Seu Moacir.
Although the main attractive of Maceió are the beaches, there are other things to do. As I spent many days over there, I went to the downtown. Many of the museums were closed and the downtown is not so preserved, as 99% of places in Brazil. However, it is a tour that is nice to do if you have much time. Eating a passaport (hot dog) is good, cheap and really big (besides being a very local and no-touristic tip).
4- Walking to the Farol da Ponta Verde when the tide is low.
When you to to the Northwest of Brazil, it is useful to leand about the tide schedule. When the tide is low, you can walk to the lighthouse at Ponta Verde beach. It is really nice, you just need to be careful about the sea urchins, so it is recommended to wear flipflops.
5- Having lunch at Massagueira and visiting the rendeiras.
There are several restaurants at the lake banks. You can choose one of them and taste the local food, such as the caldinho de sururu (a clam soup). Then, you can visit the rendeiras, people who sew clothes with local lace.
6- Visiting Marechal Deodoro.
Marechal Deodoro was the first capital of Alagoas and it is the home town of Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca, the first president of Brazil. There is a charming historic center and it is woth to visit it.
7- Taking a coffee at Kopi.
It is not a really special place, but it is a cosy place and a good coffee house to spend some time or to work.
8- Going to the Alagoas North litoral.
The most famous beach is Maragogi. I went there and came back at the same day, but it is better to spend some days at Maragogi or São Miguel dos Milagres, which is as beautiful as Maragogi, but not so full of people.
9- Eating a tapioca at the tapioqueiras.
At the beach, you will see a lot of people selling tapioca. I think it is the best tapioca I have ever had. Almost all of them contain coconut and my favorite was queijo coalho (a type of cheese) with coconut. Edileuza’s place is really nice.
10- Going to Imperador do Camarão.
The most famous dish in Maceió is chiclete de camarão (shrimp bubblegum), which is shrimp with lots of cheese sauce. Maybe, I went to taste it with lots of expectations, but it was not that delicious, as everybody says. However, the breaded shrimp in three different ways is so good that I could just eat that as my entire meal.
11- Going to Garça Torta beach.
People say the main beachs of Maceió (Ponta Verde, Pajussara e Jatiúca) are not suitable for bathing. One option which is nearest than north and soutn litoral is the Garça Torta beach.
12- Eating at Divina Gula restaurant.
It is a good restaurant in Maceió. The food is Minas Gerais style and the coxinha is really delicious.
13- Tasting local food at Bodega do Sertão.
Most of capital cities has a restaurant with local food. Maceió’s is called Bodega do Sertão. It is a pay per kilo restaurant with a hege variety of food. The waiters and waitresses wear typical clothes and there are many places to take pictures.
These were my indications. For sure, I did not mention lots of places, but maybe I can come back one day and update this post. To finish this text, I want to say that Maceió is one of my favorite Brazilian capitals and I think Alagoas has the most beautiful beaches in Brazil.
