15 Places to Visit in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil

From October, 15 to October, 26, 2017, I visited Aracaju, the capital of Sergipe, and now I list some nice things I have done there 😉

1- Taking an ice cream at Cioccolato.

I did not take a picture, so I copy this one from the store Facebook page.

This ice cream place is in JFC Trade Center building and this is one of the best ice creams I have already had. Besides the hand-made gelato, there are also italian desserts, such as a delicious tiramisu.

2- Eating a pastel de camarão com catupiry (shrimp and cheese patty) at Pastel da Jany and a crab patty at Amanda’s.

The shrimp pastel is really good and full of filling. The one with crab is very traditional in Aracaju and you have to taste it.

3- Going to Feira do Turista (Touristic Fair).

It is a fair where you can buy local products and presents.

4- Visiting the Olimpio Campos Museum.

This is a museum that is inside the governo’s house and there is a free guided visit. It is nice to go there and know the history of Aracaju and Sergipe. There is another museum in the city that is nicer though. So, just visit this one if you have lots of free time.

5- Eating crabs at Passarela do Caranguejo.

In Aracaju, people gather together to eat crabs, have a beer and talk. If it is the first time you are going to eat crabs, I think you are not going to talk a lot, because you have to concentrate to break the crab shell. It is not easy and there is not lots of meat. Still, it is very common in Aracaju, so I recommend you try it. There are many restaurants that sell two crabs for the price of one in some week days.

6- Going to Aracaju Municipal Market.

Actually, there are three markets, one building next to others. There are things you find on these kind of markets in Brazil: presents, objects and food.

7- Going to Le Café and Chocolamour.

Le Café is a cosy coffee house. You can take a coffee, a basket with different types of bread and desserts. Everything is cute and it looks like a doll house. Chocolamour is a place where you can eat delicious cakes.

8- Eating at Mangará.

It is a restaurant where you can try local food (I think there is a restaurant like this an all Brazilian capitals). There are lots of places with tematic decoration where you can take pictures. I recommend you try the bolo de macaxeira (yuka cake) which is the best.

9- Visiting Cânions do Xingó.

This was one of the most beautiful tours I have already made in my life. You get tired, because it is a three hour trip to Canindé and then you get a catamaran. During the tour, the catamaran stops and you can swim at São Francisco river, take a small boat and navegate through the canyons. It is amazing!

10- Going to Museu da Gente Sergipana.

This is one of the nicest museums I have visited. It is an interactive museum in which you can talk to a salesman, play and have fun. There are interesting things such as a sergipano vocabulary. The restaurant is also good and every week there are artistic apresentations over there.

11- Walking at Orla do Atalaia.

You can’t swim at Aracaju’s beaches, but it is nice to walk there during day or night.

12- Eating at Tototó Restaurant.

It is near the Municipal Market and you can eat looking at the river, enjoying the breeze and delicious food.

13- Going to Oceanário.

It is a place of Projeto Tamar, like the ones they have in other cities. It is worth to visit if you have free time or if you really love turtles.

14- Visiting São Cristóvão.

p_20171026_152300.jpg

São Cristóvão is the 4th oldest Brazilian city and former Sergipe capital. There is a pretty and abandoned historic center. Most of the churches cannot be visited, they are opened only for Mass time. If you go there, try the queijada, a typical dessert from the city.

15- Going to Colina de Santo Antônio.

It is a hill from where you can see the city. There is a small church up there which is really cute.

These were my indications. For sure, I did not mention lots of places, but maybe I can come back one day and update this post. To finish this text, I want to say that Aracaju has many things to do, although it is a small city, and it is worth to visit it.
